Shape the Future of Eugene’s Parks

Your Legacy Begins Here

The parks, open spaces, and trails of Eugene are where life’s best moments happen. They are where we teach our children to ride bicycles, where we clear our minds on quiet morning walks, and where vibrant community health thrives.

When you reflect on the mark you want to leave, protecting these natural treasures is one of the most enduring ways to care for the community you love. You can shape Eugene’s green landscape while keeping your family’s security as your highest priority.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

Thank you for considering donating to Eugene Parks Foundation through your Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Donating directly from your IRA can be a tax-smart way to support our mission. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you make your IRA donation easily and effectively.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

  • Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): If you are 70½ years or older, you can donate up to $111,000 per year (2026 adjusted annually for inflation) directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like the Eugene Parks Foundation. This type of donation is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).
  • Required Minimum Distribution (RMD): This is the minimum amount of money you must withdraw from your tax-deferred retirement accounts each year once you reach a certain age (your RMD age). The federal government mandates these withdrawals. When you take the withdrawals, you are taxed on the distributions as income. If you make a QCD during the year, it counts toward your RMD amount, reducing your taxable income. Your RMD start age is based on your birth year. If you were born in 1950 or earlier, you have already reached your RMD age. If you were born from 1951 through the end of 1959, your RMD age is 73. If you were born in 1960 or later, your RMD age is 75.

Step 2: Contact Your IRA Custodian

  • Request a Direct Transfer: Contact the financial institution that manages your IRA and request a direct transfer to the Eugene Parks Foundation. This can usually be done via a distribution form or by speaking with your custodian directly.
  • Provide Necessary Information: You will need to provide your custodian or financial advisor with the following details:
    • Legal Name of Nonprofit: Eugene Parks Foundation
    • Tax ID Number: 72-1551436
    • Mailing Address: P.O Box 11618, Eugene, OR 97440
    • Contact Information: 541-239-3451, ariel@eugeneparksfoundation.org
  • Specify the Donation Amount: Please let your custodian or financial advisor know what you’d like to donate. Remember, the donation must be transferred directly from your IRA to Eugene Parks Foundation to qualify as a QCD.

Step 3: Notify Eugene Parks Foundation

  • Let Us Know: After you initiate the donation, please inform us of your intent. This helps us properly track and acknowledge your gift. You can notify us by contacting Ariel Lissman, EPF Executive Director at 541-239-3451, ariel@eugeneparksfoundation.org

Step 4: Receive Your Acknowledgment

  • Donation Receipt: We will send you an acknowledgment letter once your donation is received. This letter will confirm the amount of your donation and state that no goods or services were provided in exchange, preserving the tax-free status of your QCD.

Step 5: Consult Your Tax Advisor

  • Get Professional Advice: While QCDs can offer tax benefits, we recommend consulting with your tax advisor to understand how this donation method fits into your overall financial and tax planning.

Benefits of Donating Through Your IRA

  • Tax Advantages: A QCD can reduce your taxable income, even if you don’t itemize deductions.
  • RMD Fulfillment: Your donation can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), making it a smart, tax-efficient way to fulfill your RMD while supporting the Eugene Parks Foundation.
  • Impactful Giving: Your donation will directly support our mission to make Eugene parks exceptional through conservation, recreation, and activation.

Gifts of Appreciated Stock & Securities

Consider making a lasting impact by donating stocks to the Eugene Parks Foundation. By contributing appreciated securities you’ve held for more than one year, you can support our mission to enhance public spaces in Eugene while potentially receiving significant tax benefits.

When you donate long-term appreciated stock directly to a charity, you generally avoid the capital gains tax you’d owe if you sold it first. And if you itemize deductions, you may be able to deduct the stock’s full fair market value at the time of the gift — rather than just what you originally paid — subject to IRS limits on charitable deductions.

This can let you give more generously and more tax-efficiently than a cash gift of the same size, all without touching your cash reserves. We recommend speaking with your tax advisor to see how this strategy fits your specific situation.

LEGACY GIFTS FOR THE FUTURE

Planned or deferred giving enables you to arrange charitable contributions in a manner that maximizes personal objectives and financial goals. Many plans provide flexibility during your lifetime, and the Eugene Parks Foundation will realize their benefit sometime in the future.

Gift in Your Will or Trust (Bequests)

A bequest in your will or living trust allows you to make a transformational gift without impacting your current financial stability. You retain full control of your assets throughout your lifetime.

Official Bequest Wording for Your Attorney

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Eugene Parks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Eugene, OR (Tax ID: 72-1551436), [insert % of my estate / $ / or specific asset] to protect, enhance, and sustain public parks, trails, and open spaces.”

Retirement Account & Life Insurance Beneficiaries

The Benefit of Deferred Giving

Naming the Eugene Parks Foundation as a primary or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account (401k or IRA) or life insurance policy is one of the easiest ways to leave a lasting legacy — and it costs you nothing today. You simply update your beneficiary designation form with your account custodian or insurance company; no changes to your will are required.

Retirement accounts left to individual heirs are typically subject to income tax when withdrawn. Because the Eugene Parks Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3), we’re able to receive the full account balance with no income tax owed — making retirement accounts one of the most tax-efficient assets you can give. For donors with larger, taxable estates, a charitable beneficiary designation also qualifies for an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction, meaning no estate tax is owed on the portion left to the Foundation.

As with any planned gift, we recommend speaking with your financial or estate advisor to determine what makes sense for your overall plan.

Income-Producing Legacy Gifts

Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs) and Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) let you support Eugene’s parks while receiving income for life.

Charitable Gift Annuity

In exchange for a gift to the Eugene Parks Foundation, you (and/or a loved one) receive a fixed, dependable payment for life, based on your age at the time you set it up. You’ll also receive a partial income tax deduction right away.

Charitable Remainder Trust

With a Charitable Reminder Trust, you transfer assets into a trust that pays you income for life or for a set number of years. When the term ends, what remains goes to support the Foundation’s work. Like a gift annuity, it comes with an upfront partial tax deduction — and it can be a smart way to turn appreciated property into income while supporting a cause you love.

Every situation is different — we’re happy to walk you through the options, or you can check with your financial advisor.
