WHITE WATER PARK
Where tourism, environmentalism, recreation, and economics meet
The Willamette River Whitewater Park is in the beginning stages of planning. A potential site has been located near the base of the I-5 Bridge and in the Alton Baker Park Canoe Canal. This project would create a dynamic series of recreational and habitat enhancing diversions in the Willamette River. Communities across the country have undertaken this type of project with great success and positive economic growth. River surfing has become a national phenomenon making this future project a destination for visitors and local enthusiasts alike. The Eugene Parks Foundation is involved in garnering support for the project and assisting with long-term planning and feasibility studies.
Some specific benefits of this project include:
- Improved waves in the Willamette River and canoe canal for kayaking and river surfing
- Improved safety for paddling in the Willamette River
- Improved conditions for paddling in the canoe canal
- Improved shading of the canoe canal to reduce water temperature
- Reduced bacteria in the canoe canal to improve water quality
- Enhanced habitat conditions for spring Chinook salmon
